Time with Jesus
1. The Transition Word: Therefore
Paul's "therefore" in 4:1 is pivotal.
This word transitions from Doctrine to duty, position to behavior, principle to practice.
Doctrine → Duty: Chapters 1-3 are about our position in Christ: chosen, redeemed, sealed, seated with Christ. Chapters 4-6 call us to live worthy of that identity.
Principle → Practice: Paul moves from teaching truth to urging believers to walk in it.
Identity → Lifestyle: Who we are in Christ (children of God, His workmanship) is the basis for what we do (unity, holiness, love, submission).
It's as if Paul is saying: "Because of everything God has done, now walk in a way that reflects it."
2. Paul's Identity: A Prisoner for the Lord
I love how Paul says .. a prisoner "for" the Lord!!
A reminder that the world will imprison you (might not be physical imprisonment) for your beliefs, for your reverence for Jesus Christ! Walking the faithful Christian walk can be hard or costly! God seen Paul's obedience in Him and people feared his obedience and reverence for God! The use of the word "for" shows his walk with God and how in Christ and through Christ alone can you find freedom. The world offers you imprisonment!
For highlights purpose: his imprisonment wasn't random or wasted, it was tied to his obedience to Christ.
Cost of Discipleship: Following Christ may not always lead to physical prison, but it will lead to cultural resistance, social rejection, or spiritual opposition.
Freedom in Christ vs. Imprisonment in the World:
Paul, though chained by Rome, was spiritually free; those outside Christ may appear free, but remain enslaved to sin.
This flips the world's definition of freedom upside down.
3. The Call to Unity
Paul's great emphasis in verses 3-6 is the unity of the Spirit.
Seven "Ones":
One body
One Spirit
One hope
One Lord
One faith
One baptism
One God and Father
This is not generic unity ("let's just get along") but theological unity rooted in the Triune God. The church is to mirror God's oneness.
• Practical Outflow: Humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another in love. Unity isn't automatic, it requires intentional effort ("eager to maintain" verse 3).
4. The Tension: Unity and Diversity
Later in the chapter (verses 7-16), Paul explains that while we are "one body," we are given different gifts.
The purpose of these gifts is not to elevate self but to build up the body until we all attain maturity in Christ.
Unity is not uniformity. Christ celebrates diversity of roles within the oneness of the body.
5. Application for Us
Our "prison" moments: Where might obedience to Christ cost us today? Reputation, relationships, career advancement?
Guarding unity: Am I walking in humility and gentleness in my church community, or feeding division?
Rooted in truth: Christian unity must be anchored in the "ones" Paul lists, anything else is counterfeit unity.
Living worthy: Does my daily life reflect the weight of the calling I've received in Christ?
It's so powerful how Paul anchors everything in Christ: one body in Him, one Spirit who indwells us, one hope secured by Him, one Lord who reigns, one faith we profess, one baptism that unites, and one Father over all.
