Galatians 2:11–21 (ESV)

Paul opposes Peter.

1. Paul calling Peter “Cephas”… his Aramaic name the name Jesus gave him, meaning rock. isn’t random. That right there is powerful to me. It’s like a reminder: You’re the one called ‘rock’… so why are you wavering? Remember who you are. Remember who called you. Remember what you were brought out of and what you were called into. You don’t get to carry the name and not walk in it. Calling Peter “Cephas” it identifies him clearly but also carries weight, this is the “rock” Jesus named… now acting inconsistently with that calling

     2.  “I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned.” Whew. That’s bold. That’s real love. Not passive. Not silent. Not behind his back. Correction to his face. Public issue → public correction.
Peter wasn’t being who God called him to be in that moment and Paul the Apostle didn’t let it slide because this wasn’t just behavior… this was the gospel on the line.
Who is our Paul when we’re Peter? Who loves us enough to risk tension so we stay aligned with truth? And are we bold enough to be that Paul when it’s uncomfortable?

    3.  Peter sat with the Gentiles… living in the freedom of the gospel. But when certain men came from james, he withdrew and separated himself. That’s where it hits. Yes, it can look “holier than thou”… but really it was fear. Fear of man. And fear will have you switching up. Fear will have you shrinking back. Fear will have you protecting your image instead of standing in truth. So now it’s not just inconsistency, it’s hypocrisy. And it didn’t just affect him, Barnabas was led astray too.That’s serious. Because when you carry influence, your compromise multiplies. When you’re “Peter” in a room, people follow your lead… whether you realize it or not.

So we have to ask ourselves:
When I move out of alignment… who is being affected because of me?

    4.  “Their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel…” That line right there cuts deep. It wasn’t just that Peter made a mistake. It’s that his actions were out of step with the gospel. Meaning: what he was doing didn’t match what he claimed to believe. And if we’re being real… how many times do we do the same? Say we’re Christ-like… but switch depending on the room. Bold in private… silent in public.
Loving when it’s easy… distant when it costs us something. It’s not just about “living in the world” it’s about switching identities depending on who’s watching.

    5.   “We know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ…” This is the foundation of everything. Paul wasn’t just correcting behavior, he was protecting the gospel.
Because the moment we act like righteousness is earned.. we start to undermine what Jesus already finished. Jesus already paid it all. He took what we deserved!!! Before the cross and on the cross. So it’s not about performing to be accepted.. it’s about living from the place that we already are. And if I’m being real… there are times we struggle to even speak for Him, walk for Him, love like Him, repent before Him. But that’s not a call to perform harder, it’s a call to surrender deeper.

This is the real life. Not trying harder. Not putting on a front. Not switching up.

Dying to self. Living by faith. Walking in truth.

•We all have Peter moments.
• We all need Paul voices.
• But above all.. we have to stay in step with the gospel. Not just in what we say… but in how we live!!
